Very good experience so far
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After hearing from numerous other amateur photographers that the Nikon D90 (with kit lens) is an excellent digital SLR, I had high expectations of this purchase. So far I have not been disappointed. The picture quality is outstanding for the price range and the features are enough to keep me creatively challenged for the foreseeable future. I look forward to learning more and gradually pushing this camera’s potential all the way.

Issue with this Kit lens and Poor customer service.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this camera and lens on 12-Sep-09 from Amazon. I read rave reviews about this camera and It was my dream come true to own a D90. Within few days I realised that there is something wrong with the lenses. .The lens started to rattle and it started giving rattling/grinding noise while auto-focussing.Then I mailed Nikon service centre and they told me it was a issue with the Vibration reduction function and may need a repair, )(yes a ‘repair’ for a brand new lens, not even a replacement!!!). I sent the product to the service centre and it reached them on october 2nd. But somehow this was entered in their registry only on october 07th. Then they updated the service order number saying they need a major part replacement(Service Repair Rank B2) in the lens which will fix this issue. And it has been lying in this state for more than 3 weeks with no proper end-time for resolution. When contacted, the replies have been more blunt than encouraging. They say they are yet to receive the replacement part. I purchased this camera well ahead of thanksgiving season just because I wanted to capture the colors of Fall in my neighbourhood. But now, its almost getting over and am totally frustrated for having invested in Nikon.I was terribly dis-appointed after having spent 1139$ for this dream.Since this is a Kit lens, I think Nikon felt they were giving these lenses for free that they didn’t care for the quality. And now their service delay is even more agonizing.

Great Camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I never wanted to be a “photographer” but when my old Kodak point and shoot broke my wife wanted a “good” camera. I researched alot and decided on the D90. I am amazed at the amount of technology in this machine. In the past two months (since buying this camera)I have read numerous books including D90 for dummies and Scott Kelbys books and watched both Nikon D90 DVD’s and we both attended the Nikon D90 Class and I am really fascinated by the quality of pictures I can take! If you are willing to learn the features of this camera you will not be disappointed.

Great shooter
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great camera. I’ve been shooting with point-and-shoots for years, opting for the Canon Digital Elph line of cameras. The limitations of the point-and-shoots in action sequences, low light, or difficult lighting became too frustrating, so I finally made the plunge and bought a D-90. The camera is beautifully capable of handing all the situations I find myself in, for example hiking, at parties, cycling, and for portraits. The ability to shoot at 4.5 fps, take photos in low light, and adjust any function on the fly to try different approaches have made my experience of photography much more gratifying.

Nikon D90
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this camera for a month now, and I couldn’t be happier with it. I have taken a wide variety of photos, and it works great for everything. I was particularly happy with the portraits I have taken with it. I’m not new to photography or SLR cameras, but this is my first DSLR, and it has been easy and fun to learn the controls of the D90. I can’t wait to get some more lenses for my D90, so I can do even more with it. This is just a great camera.

D90 + 18-105 – std Kit
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
A lot’s been said on the technical side and the rest of the story. I’ll keep mine short…

- Am I happy with the product? – VERY!

- Any Complaints?

– Average Kit lens. Plastic mount.

– DUST on the sensor!!! Brand New out of the box!! [removed with careful use of the blower and activation of “Sensor cleaning at Start up and Shut Down” – NO more dust problem. I do swap lenses once in a while.

– Lack of auto focus during Video is a bit of a bummer but then this is a still camera – HD video is more like a freebee……

Conclusion:

Great Buy!

Am very happy with the HD video feature…..even though in a rather primitive implementation stage …..the range of lenses offers some very interesting and unique Video possibilities!!

Best I’ve owned
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Nikon D90 is the best camera I’ve ever owned. I currently own a D90 and D700. However, the ease of use, the portability and the utilitarian characteristics are amazing on the D90. The picture quality is equal to professional levels if you learn how to use this camera. I simply took pictures non-stop for six months and began to learn how to adjust settings. While I use the non-automatic settings you can get great pictures using the automatic settings as well despite what the books and critics say. I like nature photography and the fast setting has given me some great shots of birds in flight and animals on the run (horses, coyotes, deer, rabbits, etc). I recommend getting a Nikkor 70-300mm lens for telephoto and a Nikkor Micro 105mm for close-up work. You can use the 70mm-300mm without a tripod because it comes with vibration control. Very nice, indeed. With the 18mm-55mm lens that comes in the kit this is all the lens you will need to cover a wide range of shooting. I have photo’s in galleries from this camera. I am a serious photographer and have read the manuals, books, and watched video’s on this camera. I have also taken some courses on photography in general. While I use the D700 for some of my work I use my D90 for most of what I do. I highly recommend this camera to anyone.

replaced my D80 with this gem
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I would be giving this a 5 star, but the video is a little disappointing. The camera is awesome and very similar to my old D80. I upgraded only for the video function and soon realized its limits. Indoor low light is not good for taking videos. Once you focus and start the video the subject, in my case a 2 year old boy, easily gets out of focus and you can’t change it. So not a real replacement for a video camera, but for those short quick times I need to video something it works fine. Camera itself is awesome and with my 18-200mm Nikon VR lens I am always ready to capture those fleeting moments of a two year old.

D90 Camera bad shell quality
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Recently, I bought a Nikon D90 Kit from Amazon.com

1.) I found that the whole camera set was produced in Thailand. After unpacking the camera and the lens, I found that both of my hands & shirt cuffs are having black dirt marks. Later I discovered that the black dirt was come from the rubber shell of the camera & lens. May be the chemical composition of that batch of rubber materials had problems, it seems that the rubber is aging. I wondered why I spent such amount to buy a mid-range camera set, but the shell quality is so bad — no quality control for such kind of precision equipment. That means their quality assurance is questionable in Thailand. I will not buy any Nikon products produced in Thailand in future. Actually, I am a Nikon fans, I had several cameras & lens at home all of them are Nikon, as I trust their quality in the past (made in Japan). But this time a little bit disappointed.

2.) Another thing, the 18-105mm kit lens mount is in plastic which is no good for long term use, and may not be durable. This is my first time to buy expensive camera lens in plastic mount. But I am not sure how long it will last without problems.

3.) If you have bigger hands & long fingers, you will find that your right hand fingers will always hit your left hand fingers at all time when you use this camera. This is also my first time experience for finger hitting in using cameras in my photography lives.

4.) Finally, I found that the image quality of this camera is not so bad compared to the shell after taking several photos in dark area.

Don’t discount the lens mount error
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The D90 was my first step into DSLR and I chose Nikon because of 20+ years of good past experience with a rock-solid (and very basic!) N2000 and later the digital Coolpix 950. I bought my D90 in June 2009 and for several thousand images it fell in the category “you shouldn’t ever feel this close to an inanimate object”. I like the way it feels in my hand and its weight isn’t a problem for me, although I’ve seen a few negative comments about that. I’m happy with the bright display. The batteries have lasted well. The controls are where they should be for a Nikon. It was solid: you can easily freeze the hummingbird in the air and the water droplets falling from a dolphin at its apex. It had the kind of responsiveness that you’ll recall if you’ve worked with plain old SLRs (and minus the “lag” of the older non-SLR Coolpix!).

It’d be safe to say I love almost everything about the camera…*except* that I’ve recently run into the F– lens mount error. I’d read Amazon reviews before buying the camera, but blew off what people had written

You can read more about the problem (and 18-135 lens kit) here:

[...]

and in the results of a Google search of “d90 lens error” or similar.

I’ve removed the lens, cleaned the contacts, etc. but quite often now I’ll be squeezing a shot and nothing…sometimes jiggling the lens or remounting fixes the problem. Even slight pressure on the side of the zoom can correct the problem.

All I can really say about the problem is that if you don’t have it, you’ll probably love the D90. If you *do* have it, it’s really a deal breaker. In any situation with a moving/changing subject, you almost never have a second chance once you’ve nudged the lens a bit and tried to clear it. And having that confidence in your equipment that it will work reliably when you need it is unspeakably important.

Without the lens mount/electrical contact error, I’d give the camera the highest rating. As is, I now have to figure out what the Nikon terms are on servicing the camera, determine where to send it, etc. All I really want now is to have this camera back working correctly because I think it’s a beautiful piece of technology when working.

Great camera for the enthuisiast.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I got this camera for my wife because she has an unexplored interest in photography, and she absolutely loves it. She went from not knowing the difference between iso and aperture to being able to fine tune the camera to get the image she wanted. The shots are far from perfect but they definitely have a beautiful professional look to them.

I work in video and film production and so i have a great appreciation for the tremendous level of control the camera gives you. Huge iso/shutter ranges, it would be nice to have a quicker lens though. We have figured out a majority of the controls thanks to the easily accessible manual and quick manual and good old fashioned playing around.

The best part we’ve found is that even without painstakingly setting manual settings the camera takes beautiful pictures on it’s automatic settings. Our real gems up to this point have come from manual settings, but that just means we have lots of room to improve.

An SDHC card is a good addition for quick read/write functionality.

This is a fantastic camera to help the photography enthuisiast or professional to create stunning photos well above it’s price.

Best product I ever bought
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my first review, and I am glad that I writing on this great product Nikon D90 with 18-105 VR lens. From the past few months I have been in the market for a moderate to advanced level DSLR, and been doing some research and found that this is perfect for me.I bought this camera from Amazon for $1030.

After playing with this I am very happy with product and trying to explore more features.

What I like

1.Picture quality – While your typical digital camera screen offers roughly 230,000-dot resolution, the Nikon D90 cranks it up to 920,000 dots, and the difference is immediately apparent.

2.I found the photos are crisp, colors are rich and lifelike.

3.Easy to use

4.Live view mode

5.You can customize D90 to your heart’s content.(I am using Nikon’s User manual and David Busch’s Nikon d90 book to get to master all the settings and features.)

What I don’t like

1.Price

I would defnitely recommend this product to a friend. Thanks for reading this. Happy clicking :)

Great for the semi-pro
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have a D40 and a D60 and was about to purchase a D5000, but after looking at all the reviews I could find of each model, I chose to add the D90 to my collection…so glad I did. The quality is great for the price, and the pictures are amazing. I have added a wide angle (11-18) lens and I am so impressed with the results. I belong to a retro Thunderbird club, and getting 70 T-Birds in a clear concise photo was a major concern. Even large prints of the pics I took are of poster quality…which means, blown up, much detail can be seen. Great camera!

Surprised and surprised again, this Nikon is a keeper!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I own and have used amateur cameras for a very long time. It is rarely today that I am so impressed. But this Nikon, as pleasing as some of the great cameras of the past, compels me to recommend it to you.

The central attraction for me, a picture taker not a camera operator, is the ease with which I can make great shots having very few settings to deal with. Night shots are outstanding, and this an inbuilt option on the function selector makes such things very easy to do.! No fiddling or tweaking needed nor required. Consider what used have to be done to get such shots.

Like another camera that I still use and love, Kodak Z710, I can opt for PASM shots if I want to experiment, and on the Nikon D90 DSLR the results instantly displayed on the large screen on back making corrections very easy.

But for those of us not into fiddling with such settings, preselected set-ups for the most popular shots are built into the D90, all set out on a function dial on the top of the camera. These are, Auto, Flash-Off Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close-Up, Sports and Night-Portrait as well as PASM.

Which brings me to the supplied 18-105MM DX VR AF lens. Very nice for the price offered here, and it surprises with every shot, all of which are good! BTW.

Even though the quick start booklet is very well done, newbies to DSLRs will get more out of the larger user manual. In particular that warns against fiddling – even accidentally BTW – with the focus ring on the lens when the lens focus selector is set to auto.

Buy the remote control – it lets you operate the exposure button when your camera is on a stand and you are the other side of the room!

Waited for a whole year before I bought this but was devastated with the frequent errors and freezes
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The Camera would have received a 5 star rating for everything else but one thing that ruins everything for me is the error that it comes up with very frequently and completely hangs.

It’s been 3 weeks with the camera with infrequent use and it has already frozen 5 times so far which required me to remove the battery to rest the same. I also own a Nikon N70 and my brother owns a Nikon D70 and they both have no issues. So it is surprising that I am now the owner of a product that is probably poorly constructed. I initially thought that it could be a software bug but it appear more like a manufacturing defect now.

Best camera for the $$$
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve owned a point and shoot camera for 2 years now, and I have always been jealous of the quality and versatility of DSLR cameras. I didn’t want to chunk down $1K on a camera without knowing about them, so I did a lot of homework. Before purchasing the Nikon D90 w/ kit lens, I researched several web sites along with other photographers and artists alike. All sources pointed to the Nikon brand for it’s high quality build, reputation and ease of transition from newbie beginner shots to the professional arena. I opted for this model in lieu of previous cheaper Nikon’s so I can use older glass prime lenses with the D90, thus potentially saving me money in the future when it comes to buying different lenses. The kit lens is an excellent beginner lens, however after 500 or so pictures, I can see it’s limitations, and will be looking for a 50mm f/1.4-f1.8 lens for better portrait pictures. I would not, however, go and buy a ton of expensive lenses before you use the kit lens and determine if it is enough for you or not. I searched several competitor web sites and stores and Amazon offers the best price for this kit. Other web sites are roughly $120-200 more for the same kit (October 2009). I knew that a camera of this caliber would be a challenge, so I bought a book on digital photography specifically around the D90 prior to purchase. I have the grasp of the basic functions, and regular day pictures, however night photography is a little trickier. I would highly recommend a tripod if you plan to shoot a lot in low light conditions. Even though the camera has VR, it does not fix all movement/exposure issues in low light conditions.

MAIN PROS:

- Great price

- Ease of use (with basic features)

- Interchangeable with older lenses for better future value

- Live View

- Great 12.3 megapixels for very sharp photos

- In camera photo editing

- Shoots in RAW & JPEG

MAIN CONS:

- Nikon software is TERRIBLE! I use a Mac running 10.6 snow leopard and the software crashes constantly. Nikon’s web site has no solution for this, even after the software supposedly updates itself after install. Apple’s Aperture, iPhoto and Adobe products have no problem recognizing the camera and quickly importing the photos.

- Kit does not include a SD card, therefore preventing you from taking pictures right out of the box. Prepare to make a run to the store for a minimum of 4GB SD card (takes about 1K JPEG photos).

Getting F– ERROR on my D90 camera…
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Over all the Camera is good. it takes great pics and the quality is good. But my camera is just 2 months old and it already started acting up. The most annoying was, I see the error F– very often right in the middle of taking pictures.. i went through all online blogs and tried everything and the problem still persists.. I think lot of people are having this issue, Is Nikon aware of it and doing anything about it?.

My one and last camera!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am a serious amateur photographer. My last two cameras were already advanced compact cameras. The D90 is the first low-end professional SLR with exchangable lenses that I own. I bought the D90 along with a combination of Nikon lenses and a Nikon flash. But I want to concentrate in the camera: The D90 is smaller than the real professional ones but larger and heavier than any advanced compact. You get used to its weight tough, meaning, it is not unbearable. Take this from a 5’4″ woman. Despite the additional weight, I like the camera’s solid feeling. Although it delivers and it delivers well, buyers should know that it is a VERY complex little light-image computer in your hands. The menus are easy to work with and to remember; they are very logical. But there are plenty menus. I am still learning them as I learn more about digital photography in the classes I am taking. I use the Liveview but not as much as other people like to use it. The only thing I do miss is the flip off viewer of my compact cameras. I like to take pictures of my pets from the ground, and without a flip off viewer you cannot do this without laying on the groud yourself.

I only buy lenses and flashes from Nikon because the camera works great with its own equipment. I have the 18-200 lens and I could not be happier with the results I get.

If you are serious about moving to a bit higher level in your photography skills, this is a great camera and it could very well be the only camera you need. Cameras and lenses are expensive, so enthusiast photographers like me should pick carefully the items that actually need according to their skill level. I recommend the D90 without any reservation to serious amateur photographers.

This camera is smarter that I am.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have had the camera now for about three months and I haven’t taken a bad shot yet (slightly exagerated). The Nikon D90 if left on auto, would be the best point and shoot I have ever had but I am starting to learn what this camera is capable of when I become involved (AKA. Photographer). This camera is truly a painters palette waiting for the composer. The camera is also very intuitive and tries to cover my mistakes if I choose to let it. You can take as much or as little control as you are comfortable with. As a previous poster has mentioned, do not buy the kit, purchase the body only and add lenses separately. I borrowed a friends D90 with a kit lens to see if it was the camera for me, thank goodness he had another premium lens or I would have probably not bought the D90. With the kit lens it gives the camera a feel of cheapness and the picture quality is OK. I have added a Nikon prime 50mm f/1.8 and a Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8. Both have great glass and great response time (I highly reccommend them both). I also bought the kit lens 18-55mm 3.5($50.00 used from the friend I initially borrowed the D90 from), it has its uses.

My day job is a quality engineer for a major aerospace company (space shuttle core component supplier), and I am very scrutinous of everything engineered. My opinion of construction quality is very favorable. I love the way the lenses snap into place with no slop. At first I was a little skeptical of the plastic body as opposed to the metal body of the D3 (which I have used). My night job is shooting youth sporting events for hours on end and the weight savings is sooooo apprecitated. I geuss what I am trying to get to is, do not evaluate this camera with a kit lens. I also recommend purchasing at least two (2) 4G cards with as high a write speed as possible. Not because the camera can’t keep up but because your computer probably won’t. This camera has a large buffer, so fire away.

If you want a very well written opinon of this camera from a professional photographer, I recommend you visit Ken Rockwells web page [...] I do not know the gentleman, but when I was researching for this purchase I consumed all the information I could get and I made my determination after reading his review. I highly recommend his webpage for just practical information on all things photographic.

In closing, I highly recommend the D90 camera body with quality lenses (so far Nikon (not kit) and Sigma, I like). If you thrive on validation and flattery, I also recommend this camera, because you will get a lot of attention much like Ashton Kucher on the Nikon commercial. I never tire of hearing “let me see, let me see”. I would rate it third behind children and puppies as a chick magnet.

The D90 Rocks!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am an amateur photographer by far but got tired of missing the great moments waiting for my piece of junk ‘point and shoot’ to figure out that I wanted it to take a picture. After missing every attempted shot at my daughter’s gymnastics meet, I told my wife we are droppin’ some coin on a nice camera. I did a lot of web research reading reviews and talking with friends who had nice cameras. I had to go to Bestbuy to handle a few cameras because Montgomery ALABAMA does not have a single camera store……capital city too! NICE!

Bottomline – this camera does more cool stuff than I had realized. Download the owner’s manual from Nikon and see for yourself. I will not miss a great moment again. I could go into all of the features but others have done a much better job at writing reviews. I have never owned a Nikon nor a dSLR camera for that matter so I really have nothing to compare it to except my crappy ‘point and shoots (misses)’. Try Cameta Camera on eBay because they offer the same package deal as on Amazon but for $40 less. Still a good deal on Amazon with the extra lens, case, battery, etc.

Great SLR!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is our 1st SLR & was recommended to us by a friend. The picture quality is outstanding. Since we are new to photography, we like that the auto and pre-selected settings produce awesome pictures, without much thought put into them. We can also hand the camera off to someone who’s never used it, and they will take a great photo as well. The lens that came with the camera is very versatile. The camera fits very nicely into your hand. We also like the piece that protects the LCD on the back. We’ve had the camera about a month and have taken hundreds and hundreds of high-quality photos! Highly recommened SLR, even for beginners!

The only negative that i can think of is the video quality – it is not comparable to the camcorders.

Rest all awesome.. i go with 5 stars for this beauty.

great camera.

a really good starting off point for anyone that wants to become a professional photographer without paying the price.

the lense it came with isn’t all that great but that doesn’t take away at all from the camera itself.

and that’s all easily fixed by getting new lenses which i’ve already ordered a nikkor 35mm

i’m still getting used to some of the new settings and trying to figure every thing out that i possibly can.

but i love it.

and highly recommend it.

plus i got it at a really good price.
