4 way VR Image Stabilization minimizes the effects of camera shake for sharper results

  • Nikon’s original Best Shot Selector automatically takes up to 10 shots while the shutter is pressed and saves the sharpest image.

Great picture quality… but….
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
7x Zoom is nice, but I really wish P&S cameras had better zoom that didn’t distort. This was a gift for the girlfriend, she gives it a 5 of 5, but she’s being nice i guess (since i bought it for her).

Here’s what she has told me about it:

Great for:

The Zoo, concerts (only if you’re on the rail), Home and pets, Gardens, detailed close ups, easy to use, big display for photo review.

Not so great for:

When you’re pretty far from something, dark-photo quality (night time, clubs, etc), presets are stupid sometimes.

Guess she’s gonna get a SLR for X-mas, better start saving up!

Great P&S camera hands down, just needs a bit more zoom =/

Great Camera!!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is the fourth Nikon camera I have had, and like the others I was not disappointed. The camera takes great pictures, even when zoomed out. The only fault I find with the camera is that the zoom button is too touchy. The menu is easy to navigate and gives you lots of ways to personalize your picture taking. Unlike some cameras this camera even takes great night photos, even when hand held. Would highly recommend this camera.

Nikon Coolpix S630 12MP Digital Camera with 7x Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Jet Black)

Wonderful little point-and-shoot camera. With 12 megapixel resolution and 7x optical zoom, its a versatile device with a large display. There are a number of different features: camera mode, numerous scene modes, and movie mode. Fits in a shirt pocket, so its easy to carry. Nikon quality at a reasonable price.

Tested for 3 weeks in Europe …
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased a Nikon Coolpix S630 just before I went to Europe five weeks ago. After 1000 pictures of mountain tops, people, dark museums and action shots, I am done testing it and am very pleased. For years I wanted a hassle-free camera with a high amount of optical zoom yet small in size and shoots well without a lot of light. I hoped to spend less money but was afraid a cheaper camera would frustrate me due to lack of features, poor quality or confusing operation. The S630 gives me all I want in a camera for a reasonable price.

My cousin was a professional photographer and he is impressed with how well this camera performs. Closeups of flowers are spectacular. Pictures displayed on a 42″ TV have great resolution and color accuracy. Pictures in poorly lit rooms come out with amazing clarity. Video and audio quality also are impressive.

Reading reviews critical of this camera made me a little nervous about deciding to buy this camera but I am glad that I figured out they are overly critical except for the zoom speed. The zoom motor is too fast and you often overshoot where you want it to stop. All too often it will not stop where you want it to and you have to walk forward or backward to frame the shot. No camera will always produce a perfect shot on the automatic setting. Photography is a learned skill. The large screen lets you see if the shot did not come out right. You learn and try one of the other settings available. Battery life was roughly 125? pics. Time between pics is a little slow, but OK.

Pros: Quality pictures, video and audio; 7x optical zoom in a small body; logical hassle-free operation; reasonable price; low light pics are outstanding; has many other nice features.

Cons: 1) Zoom speed as described above. 2) The Nikon S630 requires a special battery so you need to pay about $30 more for a spare battery that you need to keep charged at all times. 3) The software included has no editing capability just viewing and transferring. 4) The optional Leather Case (Nikon #5811) is too small to carry a spare battery or extra memory card. I bought one at Wal-Mart that works perfectly. It was a little tight at first, but it stretched out after a couple days.

Great Point and Shoot, Minor Inconveniences
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The camera actually feels pretty solid in my hands, you can tell it’s plastic but it doesn’t feel cheap overall. The pictures I took came out great, everything was clear even on most of the 7x zoom shots (more zoom = you need to move less). I am very happy with the quality of the lens and the layout. Nikon really gave it some extras such as using a zoom ring and a comfortable thumb rest while shooting (portrait and landscape modes). I am pleased with the shooting response time (from powering on to taking a picture) and have not experienced any shutter lag (I know that it IS slower than others, but really if you’re getting a small point and shoot you have to give up something when the camera is $225.) I did play around with some of the features such as messing with the AUTO settings and the automatic smile mode. I didn’t find the auto smile mode (it shoots when it senses a smile) to be that worthwhile. There are a lot of scene modes which can be overwhelming, but the auto scene selector works great! I have not done enough testing to see how the color really turns out under different settings.

I gave this 4 stars and not a full 5 for a few reasons that are more personal annoyances than performance issues. The first is that the little dial on the back feels cheap. I would have rather this been metal. It doesn’t affect performance, but it does take away from the experience when you feel it. The second problem is that the menu is terrible. Nikon needs to put some R&D into making a menu that is very intuitive and user friendly. A nice GUI would really go a long way – this looks like a theme from DOS when you perform certain actions (such as format the card). Another thing is while looking at the thumbnails it is a pain to zoom back out. There is no quick way to get back to the picture in original size. Instead you have to zoom out .2x each time. Yow can hold it down, but then it goes to the view where you can see multiple thumbnails on the screen. A .5 or 1 second delay would help this out. The smallest complaint is that the charger does not have a flip out plug, you have to take the charging unit AND the (long) cord with you when you travel.

All in all these are tiny complaints for such a great camera. I recommend getting a case and screen protector for it and of course a large SDHC card and extra battery (from experience). Really this is a great camera for a little over $220 (at the time of this review). As with anything make sure you do research and try to get a hands on demo before buying it.

Very Poor Image quality – my old 5 mp did a better job.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera after owning a Canon S50 (5 mega pix). The Nikon S630′s build quality is ok, The size is good, the 7x zoom is nice but it’s all a waste of money because the image quality is so bad. I ended up returning it and bought a Panasonic LX3.

More Mega pixels is not the answer, the photos from my old canon S50 were very very sharp when you zoomed in on the image. When I say zoomed in I mean when viewing them on a computer. Because of this sharpness you can zoom in and crop the photo and have very goods results. When I tried to do this with the Nikon S630 the pictures were blurry. I tried several settings along with using a tripod (with VR shut off) with no luck. This camera just had very poor image quality.

GREAT CAMERA, GREAT PRICE
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Positive:

The camera provides excellent features, 12 mpxls, and a fast shudder release. Easy to use and light to carry.

Negative:

Battery life is mediocre and I recommend a back up battery. The software for downloading, editing, etc. on a computer is fair. You need a better software program. HP has an excellent program, but it appears to be incompatible with Nikon.

Excellent small digital camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this for travel so I would not have to carry my Nikon D70. The pictures have the same expected quality as from my SLR camera. The zoom control is not as flexible as I would like. It seems to want to go from one extreme to the other rather than slowly letting you choose the power of zoom. Other than that it is extremely nice to carry, fits easily in my jeans pocket or my purse.

Great little camera!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is actually my second Coolpix 630. My first one was stolen. I immediately ordered another one because dollar for dollar no other camera can produce the results I got from this small and handy powerhouse.

The zoom is great at 7X optical, and 12 megapixel gives me all the resolution any normal user will ever need. Easy to use features, including an “auto” that does all the work for you. I can even make movies.

I studied long and hard before I bought and my research paid off handsomely. I strongly recommend this product. My only suggestion is to spend the $40 for a 150X memory card for ultra-fast operation between shots.

Good choice

Camera is simple to use both for stills and video and produces sharp images. A good gift for someone wanting to take family photos without mastering the ins and outs of more complex digital slrs.

Great camera at a decent price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I just purchased this camera. I have been using a Casio Exilim for about 3 years and I was looking for a new point and shoot with decent zoom.

I have only had the camera for a couple of days and was a little concerned at some of the bad reviews that I have seen here and on other sites. Well – I have to say that so far, I am extremely pleased. The zoom feature is fantastic. Yes, it takes a little getting used to the control for the zoom, but once you get the hang if it, it is great.

Also, the camera takes great pictures in low light. This was another thing i was looking for.

Jumping from the 7 MP camera to this 12 MP camera also definitely is a great improvement as well.

I would definitely recommend this camera.

Would really like to have a dock.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
—At this point, I’m still trying to get use to my new camera. But, it’s not as easy as I thought

it would be. Without the dock to use when not in use, makes it harder to use continuously. If it wasn’t for the extra battery I bought to go along with it, the evening pictures I took wouldn’t have been here from our last camping trip. It’s disapointing to have to change batteries every 8 hours when a dock would have kept the camera ready for use for longer time.

—It’s also disappointing for me to not be able to take more pictures before having to change the battery. But, for the price I paid, that will have to be something I’ll have to get use to. Let me explain!! When you are riding on a back of a motorcycle, you must have a camera that will react to the movement and the shots that you are taking. Sometimes you will go longer than 8 hours and other times it

could be a 300 mile trip and take more than 220 pictures at a time. But if the battery goes dead before that it’s a bit hard to change the battery as you move down the highway. My other camera I had for 3 years got broke. Spent money to get it fixed, it came back and was terrible.Don’t have any idea what I was doing wrong. So this was my next choice and it’s really going to take patiences to get it to do what I want it to do and when. When you switch like this from one to another, you will lose something and what I lost was something I came to expect. Which is what I wanted this camera to do.

—As for the camera itself, I love it. Traveling as we do, it fits in my hand quite nicely and can take some great shots moving or sitting still. I can’t say that I’m disapoointed in that part of it at all. I don’t take pictures of just one thing and it falls right in there with what I’m doing at the time. I’m not a pro, but some of my pictures could be used as such, that I have gotten from this camera. It’s light weight and has the settings that are needed to accomplish what ever you are wanting to do.

—As for the other – it will take time to get use to and I will conquer that as I go along. Then, I’ll be a happy biker and photgrapher again!!

Versatile Little Camera – Great Photos
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera so that I wouldn’t have to carry my Nikon DSLR on a European holiday. The 7x zoom in a small package sold me on this particular model. While it has many scene settings, I kept it on Auto most of the time, and most shots were perfect. I was continually pleased with the exposures. I took a lot of indoor shots in museums without a flash and almost all were keepers. The only complaint I have is a big one. The zoom lacks fine control and I was frequently unable to frame a picture the way I wanted it. The zoomed shots were clear, however. In spite of the zoom issue I am very happy with photo quality and ease of use.

Nikon Coolpix S630, Poor Picture Quality
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Product design is flawed. Very poor picture quality that is not typical of a Nikon branded product. Pictures are very noisy, even with decent ambient lighting at low ISO (eg, 100 or 200). VR doesn’t work very well and the auto white balance is awful. The camera looks great and feels good in the hand. I bought this camera because I like the idea of the 7X optical zoom in a small point and shoot, but what is the point of such a great zoom if the picture quality is so disappointing.

I assumed that my camera must have shipped with beta firmware and that an upgrade would fix these problems; however, at the time of this writing no firmware updates are available. This camera is a significant downgrade in terms of image quality over my 3 year old Casio Exilim EX-Z850. Unfortunately I’m returning the S630 to Amazon.

Got this little Black Nikon Coolpix @ best buy for $100something+ ..under $200. Not bad, can take moving shots of a Car, sometimes though it’s pain to find the right adjustment so you won’t get a gloomy pic. has cool features, a definite upgrade over my 6year old but still working big Sony Cybershot(was considered small then!) which kills batteries very fast, this one doesn’t need batteries, has it’s own Nikon Battery you could charge.

best digital camera i’ve owned so far!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
i don’t buy many cameras. here’s my 20-year photo history: this nikon replaces a panasonic lumix FS5, which met an untimely end two weeks ago. that camera replaced an older digital sony point-and-shoot, and that in turn replaced a very basic-model canon 35mm SLR (which i very likely never used to its full potential).

i’ve now owned the nikon for 3 whole days, and it has provided the most fun i’ve had with a camera since i had my old 35mm, but without the hassle of film development (and the accompanying crapshoot of “how will the pics turn out?”). i’ve drained three batteries so far and taken i can’t remember how many hundreds of sample pics without any real problems to report.

i’m not a HUGE camera nerd or photography snob, but i like to think i can take a decent picture now and then. i’m probably close to the definition of “casual photographer.” here, then, are my impressions of the nikon S630, beginning right out of the box:

the design is great. i’m an above-average-sized guy, with pretty big hands, yet the controls are easily placed and i have yet to mash the wrong button (or combo of them) with any of my giant thumbs. my girlfriend uses a small kodak digital, and the shutter and power buttons are so close on that camera that i turn the thing off as often as i snap a successful pic. not so with my new nikon, i’m happy to report, yet the case is small enough and the controls placed so that a person with normal-sized hands should find it just as easy and comfortable as i do.

battery and memory card are both a standard design, no brand-specific special purchases required. hooray for that!

the controls are well placed (the dial, or at least the ribs on it could be a tiny bit larger for my own ease of use, but that’s not a real problem), and their use as well as the menu options they lead to are reassuringly and happily clear and easy to follow (definitely unlike my experience with my last panasonic). i find that i actually LIKE tinkering with the settings while using this camera! i’m also one of those annoying people who don’t like to read the manuals that come with their gadgets, and have been able to figure out pretty much everything i’ve wanted to without having to crack a page. that says something positive about the camera, right?

shutter speed is GREAT. the autofocus is very fast, with only minimal hesitation or fluctuation – even when the zoom is fully extended (the sony and panasonic both took AGES to focus themselves). the zoom itself is great: at 7x, closeups are REALLY close, and the clarity of menu options has so far meant that the closeups i’ve taken are nice and clear, not grainy or blurred half the time like with previous cameras. the burst feature is much better engineered than on my panasonic (the slight loss of image quality when using this feature is acceptable – ya gotta make the occasional sacrifice for speed). i haven’t done much with the movie or voice options, just a little sampling with each, but they seem fine as well.

image quality has been great so far. my panasonic may have had a slight edge here (which may just be the result of having used it longer and been more familiar with it), but the pixellation and off-color problems i’ve read about in other reviews have not occurred thus far. low-light shots have turned out just fine, too (another problem i’ve read about others having).

i can’t say much for the durability or longevity of this unit, or for nikon’s customer service, as i’ve only had it a very short time. fingers crossed that i don’t have to amend this review on either of those scores.

this camera seems to have received more mixed reviews than any other i checked out before buying. i’m not sure where the problems these other folks are having are coming from. it’s a pocket camera, really, and meant for the casual photographer as opposed to the professional – do they expect it to make their morning coffee too? for my purposes (family, pets, vacation & nature shots, car shows, the occasional sports event, still lifes of stuff to sell on the ‘net), and for those of people with similar needs, it ought to work just fine.

i may not know enough about them to be a full-fledged camera snob, but i am fairly picky about my gadgets and toys. so far, the nikon S630 has been a joy to work with. unless it explodes or catches fire while i’m using it the day after the warranty expires, i’m sold!

Great little camera with very good picture quality–surprised that it comes with only enough memory for 14 pictures. You must purchase memory cards separately but with only the 4gb card you get over a thousand pictures in memory and you can purchase up to a 16gb one if you wish. The zoom is very strong and works best if used outside.

GREAT!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I was in desperate need of a new digital camera! I have an OLD version of Nikon coolpix 4800 but I love the 8x optical zoom. My friends all made fun of the giant size of it! After I saw the S630 coolpix advertised I really wanted to try it out. I went to the store and played around with it then purchased it through Amazon and got a great deal! I am VERY pleased with this camera! I took it to the Lake with me and played around with it and got some good shots! I was even able to record video of my friends innertubing at full zoom and the clarity is great! I have the settings on auto mode and the camera does a great job! All I can say is some of these negative reviews must be due to user error or they are professional photographers expecting TOO much! If you are interested in this camera, I must say I am VERY happy with my purchase. If I could figure it out, I’d share some of the great pics and videos I took! Good luck with your purchase!

A big disappointment
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I did my homework before buying this camera and I read varying reviews on it. The problem with reviews like these is that we all have different opinions on what we see as good or bad in a photo. I’m pretty picky when it comes to judging the digital quality of a photo. I decided to try this coolpix camera myself. It was the 7x zoom that convinced me to buy it.

I tested all the settings from automatic to manual.

I’ll get to the point with my main complaint – image quality was a big disappointment.

- way too much noise in varying lighting conditions

- It showed bright blue pixels in many of the photos. Even when taking portrait shots of my wife in decent lighting conditions, she ended up with hot blue pixels in about 5 or 6 areas of her face. Plants and other subjects showed the same results.

- Zooming more than about 3x or 4x yields nothing but blurry pictures unless you use a tripod and the self-timer. So, don’t expect to get nice sharp images when using the advertised 7x zoom. I even tried tricks like resting the camera against a solid stationary object, but it didn’t help at all.

Those were my main reasons for returning the camera to Amazon. I bought a Canon Powershot SD780IS instead, and I’m happier with it.

I would love a little more zoom but overall this camera is great. The pictures come out beautifully clear and it captures the colors brilliantly. I had been using a very old, very worn out camera before so this is a breath of fresh air! Great deal for the price.

This is a great camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a good camera for it being an ultra compact. Don’t let the 7x optical zoom advertisment fool you, it’s actually 4x optical and 3x digital zoom. Tough camera too, my wife actually dropped it on our wooden floor and this thing still ticks! It takes good indoor pics and great outdoor pics. The various scene options make pic taking even better! We were trying to take pics of various objects in the house from max optical zoom and it had a hard time focusing on it. This was also at night. It sometimes does take a while for it focus on non human objects and beings. We were taking pics of our dog, also from a slight distance, and it took a min or two to focus completely on her. Otherwise this is a great camera to do just about anything with. Very fast boot up and the menu is easy to navigate. Very nice LCD display too. We haven’t been disappointed with this camera yet and we’ve owned it since mid March 2009.

I am not sure
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I am really not sure if it is the camera or my expectations of a camera that has disappointed me in this purchase. The camera is well constructed, easy to use, easy to carry around. It has easy settings depending on what you want to use the camera for. The unfortunate part for me is that the pictures are often blurry. I would say 1 out of every 10 pictures comes out really well.

We purchased this camera because it was small and lightweight and easy to bring on backpacking trips. My daughter has a Nikon point and shoot and it takes great pictures. I also figured since it is a Nikon that the name would mean automatically it was a great camera. I am used to using my Canon 30D SLR so maybe my expectations are skewed but neither me or my husband are all that thrilled with the quality of the pictures.
