decent camera for the price
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera to take pictures of my girls at the swimming pool this summer. They love to swim, and I really like underwater pictures. There have been several things that I have noticed that this camera does, or doesn’t do well, but overall it has been ok.
Cons:
The first thing I noticed it the time it takes to take a picture. I also have a Canon Digital Rebel and it is fast on taking action pictures, so switching to this camera has been difficult for me. It takes 2 or 3 seconds to take a picture, so have have missed some action shots of my kids.
Second, you can’t see what you are taking a picture of underwater, even with goggles, it is just a black screen, so you are just guessing where you are taking the picture, also causing missed pictures.
Third, it doesn’t preview the picture right after you take it, so it takes even more effort to see if you got your picture or not. You have to go to review your pictures in order to see what you took.
Finally, if you delete all your pictures off of your card, it starts taking counting pictures back at 1. I like to save my swimming pictures in one folder to be able to find them quickly, and if you have 3 or 4 file named PICT001, you run into a problem. I even contacted vivitar to see if I had a setting wrong or something, but they told me that is how the camera counts pictures.
Pros:
Its waterproof. It takes decent pictures underwater, when you actually get it pointed at the subject.
Overall, I think that this camera has done what I wanted it for, and was a reasonable price. I think I am expecting this camera to work like my other more expensive, digital cameras, and it is designed for that. It is made for underwater pictures or videos.
good investment

I just got this camera for my birthday and it takes great pictures and short movies anywhere, even underwater! The reason why we can take this camera underwater is because of its waterproof case which protects the camera from anything, like sand and rain. I really enjoyed it because it was a lot of fun taking it to the beach taking pictures of it with my friends. It was definitely worth the price and you should for sure buy this camera.
Excellent for the purpose!

I bought one of these for myself and one for my host on a trip to Hawaii. We went nuts taking underwater videos of turtles and fish. Every evening we downloaded our clips to an old laptop and sat around boring our friends and family.
It captured video clips underwater very well. Make sure to set the underwater mode before shooting. With 2500MA rechargeable batteries the power usage was very acceptable.
Still shots underwater were a little more problematic because it has a slow shutter speed underwater and even a flash doesn’t help a lot. But over time it certainly is a better value than throw-away film cameras.
Regular surface daylight pictures were very acceptable with good color and exposure.
Don’t substitute this for a decent digital camera in safe, dry environments though. It bleaches out videos to the point of looking like old home movies in direct sunlight. The lack of a focus function precludes better compositions.
Conclusion, extends your digital capture environment very nicely to wet, dark, and dirty settings.
Cons: It is hard to adjust modes underwater or determine if your movie capture is already on. Hard to capture the photo subject — an external frame that was aligned with the camera’s field of view would help.
WATCH OUT!

Watch out! Amazon is trying to sell a 2GB card with this camera and it only supports a 1GB card, as is stated in the description!
Great little camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Very easy to use, just set it on auto and go. Once you get comfortable with the camera, you can fine tune light conditions, picture quality, night time, underwater, iso, etc.
I snorkeled in rough seas on Maui and it held up fine, very durable well armored, it’s rated for 30 feet underwater, but I took mine on a scuba dive to 45 feet with no problems.
The view finder is difficult to see in bright light or underwater, but I suspect you’ll find that on all camera’s of this type. The flash works well under water for bringing out the natural colors of coral, etc., but did not work in a cave where it just magnified silt in the water.
I bought this new from an Amazon store for $110.00, but it is worth full retail to me. PS: Look for images from my trip!
Bahamas Vacation every moment captured!!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This has got to be the bast purchase ever for an underwater adventure (at least in it’s price range). My sister and I were able to capture every moment of a vacation above land and under the sea. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for lasting memories snorkeling, para sailing, or scuba diving.
works under water, great price for digital camera
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Used an under water camera for the first time during my trip to Hawaii for snorkeling at Hanuma bay… It was cloudy with a bit of rain and so visibility was not so great. However, I got some decent images with this camera under water… but got great images of our group outside water. Next day we snorkled at lanikai beach, a sunny day and good visiblity resulted in some great under water images and average above the water images. Bottom line this camera is great under water if the visibility is good. The buttons are a bit hard on this camera and also you can not look at the picture on screen immediately after acquiring, there is a play button on the camera that lets you look at the pics on its lcd screen but that is not as convenient as instant replay that we are used to having on our canon digital camera. I find transferring images from my canon much more simpler so i simply switch the SD card from this camera into my canon to transfer files. Over all a good product for this price…
Maui
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This camera was purchased for a recent trip to Maui it did a excellent job I took many pictures and videos I knew it recorded sound but to my surprise while reviewing one of the videos I took of some turtles and fish you could here whales in the back ground this made for a nice touch. The only reason that I did not give it five stars was because the view finder was impossible to see under water though after a while you can figure out where to aim the camera.Who really cares though take extra pictures and delete the bad ones….
Camera dont function with super heavy duty batteries
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The camera takes a bit to get use to but functions well, until your on a trip and batteries need to be replaced. I only had super heavy duty batteries left and the camera would not function, I thought it was broken.
I came home and put in alkaline batteries, then rechargeable batteries and the camera functioned.
Overall I am pleased with the camera, but have not attempted to take any underwater shots as of yet.
great camera for the price

We bought this camera because we are kayaking now. We do tend to get wet, and don’t want to bring our digital camera with us. My brother has this camera and told us about it. It’s so easy to use, and transfer the pictures on the pc to send to family and friends. The safety strap assures that we won’t lose it if we fall in the water. Nice, clear pictures…not as good as an expensive zoom camera, but you have to remember its purpose. It got wet and the pictures were still fine. would recommend this to others.
perfect!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This camera is perfect for underwater pictures AND regular pictures! Last time we went snorkeling we made the mistake of purchasing disposable cameras – FAIL. Terrible and no depth. This one has zoom and the clarity is amazing. The colors also came out really well. It’s pretty industrial – everything is easy to access underwater. It comes with an extra water proof seal ( so 2 water proof seals in case the 1st breaks). 5 stars, easy to use (actually had to read the manual, but it comes with a manual for a reason) and produced great results.
vivicam-6200w
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Just received my Vivitar underwater camera. I will not actually be using it much till late april when I vacation in Cancun Mexico. For now I have only tested it out of water. The buttons appear a little stiff but funtion well. Very compact case that should work well . The photos that I took for test, were quit good, so I can not wait to use it underwater.
Wouldn’t power up
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Bought this camera for our Cuban vacation. We could never get it to work because it would not power up. The batteries included with the unit were expired, so we tried a new set configuring them every way possible. It only requires 2 AA batteries and it’s not rocket science. Returned the camera for refund but am out the shipping cost. Upon return, the seller claims it works perfectly. Personally, with something so simple, I wouldn’t take a chance.
Nice to have
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
this is a fun camera to have when going to the pool, beach or resort. We took it to Jamaica. The underwater pictures will turn out better when there is sunlight. Also if the water is not clear – obviously the picture wont be that clear. We had better pictures scuba diving when the sun was out an the water was calm. keep extra batteries on hand because when they get low it will die quickly. Also be prepared for a delay in the shutter speed. There is a lag between the time you take the picture and the picture is taken.
Don’t buy this product
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Got 1 day’s pictures out of the camera. Never submerged it beyond about 6 inches. Didn’t notice the water in it until it wouldn’t turn on when we went snorkeling (why we brought the camera) and changed the batteries out when it didn’t work.
I’m not an engineer or anything, but the mechanism they use to seal the buttons is crap. Taking apart the camera you will find a heavy TAPE over any electronics near the buttons. They know their mechanism to stop water from getting the body don’t work.
Digital zoom is… digital zoom. Terrible picture quality.
Piece. Of. Junk.
As long as you don’t put the camera under water, and as long as you don’t zoom.. the camera’s okay. It’s freaking splashproof, not waterproof, and I don’t know that I’d even trust it in the rain after my experience. Not that I have to worry about ever using a Vivitar product ever again. It won’t happen.
Great Camera for the price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
For the price this is an excellent little camera. It takes good pictures and is easy to use and yes it works underwater just follow the instructions. The wrist strap that comes with it is pretty poor, but these are inexpensive and easy to find. As with many digital cameras it is difficult to see the view screen in bright sunlight, but it does a great job of point and shoot so get a memory card and take several shots to be on the safe side; always a good idea anyway.
Camera good for the money
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
PRO: The camera performed as advertised on a recent snorkel trip. Pictures taken were good. Camera focus performed well. No leaks.
Cons: The display in the water is absolutely USELESS. This is definitely a “POINT AND SHOOT” camera. Not unlike a FILM camera.
Recommend taking multiple shots of subject to make sure you have at least one good one. Also have additional batteries.
Leaks

I bought this camera in mid June for a family vacation we took in August to Florida. I was looking forward to filming Manatee in the clear waters along the west coast, unfortunately it didn’t quite work out.
After getting set up for a close encounter, I stuck the camera under the surface and began to film, when I finished I lifted the camera to see that it had shut off. After drying it off and opening the case in an effort to get it working water poured out. It obviously hasn’t worked since, and I spent the rest of my vacation regretting ever buying it.
Great little number for the price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We go snorkeling on vacation just about every year and I was sick of the underwater film cameras and wanted to go digital this year. We could not find a housing for our little Canon so my husband got me this for my birthday and overall we are really pleased with the job it did for the money spent! I LOVE being able to auto-correct the pictures in Photoshop. I always hated that with film pics you were stuck with whatever you got printed. This is awesome to be able to snap away and then edit them. I also love that I can upload them into our online albums along with all of our other pics. We got a lot of great shots and used the video feature on a dolphin swim which was AWESOME!
The only negative things I have to say really is that there’s no viewfinder and the LCD display screen can be hard to see in the sun / water if there’s a lot of glare and the buttons are a bit close together. But I give it 2 thumbs up for the pictures it took!
Edited to add: I see a previous poster said it only supports a 1 GB card but I used a 2 GB card with no problems.
Not worth the price

I was all excited when I saw a fully waterproof 6.0mp camera for $119. Well, that’s where my excitement ended. The camera takes bad pictures. They have a strange hue to them. It can not be adjusted. The video is horrible. Whatever setting you use, they will be washed out. The battery indicator shows drained battery even with brand new ones installed. The shutter speed is the slowest of any camera I have ever seen. Most pictures come out blurry. No optical zoom. Just not a good camera.
Better spend your money on a nice Olympus waterproof model.
Not Bad For The $
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This is the first underwater digital camera that I would consider affordable for causal users. We go snorkeling every summer and have used disposable film cameras for our underwater photography, with mixed results. I took this camera to Mexico this year and was generally pleased with the results. I did have trouble composing my shots, as the LCD viewfinder was useless underwater. The controls need improvement as well and there needs to be some kind of a bright indicator light telling you the camera is on and ready to shoot.
Good, Functional Waterproof Camera
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera, not for its underwater capabilities, but because I was going on a whale watch, and didn’t wish to damage my primary camera with salt water. It did quite well. I even used it for some “dry” shots and the camera performed fairly well. It’s not the easiest to grasp in terms of operation, but once you realize how the zoom function works, and realize its settings are a bit more basic than other cameras, it functions quite well. I can only imagine its underwater capabilities, if they are near equal to the uses I explored, it should do rather well.
Underwater Camera

Superb service and it’s a great underwater camera for a very reasonable price. I had tried a protective case over my Canon, but this works much better.
Worth the money
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I wanted an inexpensive waterproof camera for the beach. After checking out the cost of a disposable camera coupled with the cost of developing and printing the pictures, I decided to go with this Vivitar. The pictures taken came out really good. The strap was secure and the camera did float as advertised. I also followed the reviewer’s comments about making sure that the battery compartment was secure and closed before taking it back in the water. I also dropped it in the sand, but it cleaned up quickly in the water. The down side was that the camera turned off a lot if you were taking alot of pictures. Also the LCD screen is difficult to see if you are in the sunlight. All and all, it was worth the money and it will continue to get use when we go swimming at the pool. Note, instructions included in the camera were minimal at best, so I’m sure I haven’t figured out all of the setting yet.
Great camera for the price

We purchased this camera shortly before our once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Galapagos Islands. The controls were easy to learn, and the ability to switch between still photos and video was wonderful, particularly as the seal wanted to play.
We took along rechargable AA batteries, but never had a problem with battery life during our water excursions, one of which lasted a little over 2 hours. We took a fair mix of both video and still, and the compact flash card worked well. (I used the SanDisk Extreme III cards…note that the camera can’t read above 1GB on the card.)
The underwater picture quality was quite good, and while the on-camera flash wasn’t strong enough for my deeper-diving husband, it was just fine for me, as I snorkeled around enjoying the underwater beauty. The above-water pictures are also very good – after getting our “dry-land” camera doused once by an errant wave, I started using this nearly anytime we were in a small boat.
The camera itself was relatively small, relatively lightweight, and very reliable. (Size and weight were important given our luggage restrictions.) The case and controls are nearly identical to the SeaLife ReefMaster Mini Underwater Camera, just a better price!
