It works
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I like this tripod. I just use it for basic picture taking. It took me a while to figure out how to release the nob so it will take a vertical picture. Other than that, it does the job. Definitely can’t beat the price.

travel tripod, can work with your SLRs
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I needed a travel size tripod for my D200 and my Sony point and shoot. I know this is not like those professional type expensive ones.. No. But this is very casual and easy to use. Of course there are lot of restrictions and limited functionality as to the usage. It wont work as a ballhead tripod if you have used one, but this is good for casual travel type requirements. I used it in my trip to Mexico and Italy. Sometimes I found it really not working as I need, but then its only 30 usd vs a 600 usd one.

Good tripod
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The tripod works great so far. Seems sturdy enough for heavy cameras. Pans and tilts are smooth. I like the removable adapter, you will too! Makes it easy to take cam of the tripod when you want to hold the camera.

Works OK

Can’t seem to figure how to keep the camcorder SECURELY on the top. Other than that, it works fine.

Great for the price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
For the low price, this is an excellent tripod. The main drawbacks of this tripod are the lack of an anchor for a bag, somewhat jerky panning, a less precise leveler (it is a circle with a dot in the middle), and the many plastic parts.

I use my tripod with my Canon PowerShot Pro Series S5 IS 8.0MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and it always feels sturdy. Even without a bag, this tripod should be able to handle most cameras, and the rubber feet on the bottom have excellent grip. The legs are metal, but most of the parts of plastic. Despite the shipping weight listed (4 lb), this tripod weighs under 3 lb. The current listed weight is 2.6 lb and when I weighed it I got 2.8 lb. I find it pretty light and easy to take with me, and the plastic is of good quality and very sturdy.

The panning isn’t super smooth, but unless you need really smooth panning for high quality videos, you probably won’t notice any problems. The dot-style leveler also isn’t perfect, but it should be fine for eyeballing to make sure that you are not tilting badly. The quick-release head is very handy, and is a feature not always found on cheaper tripods. All in all, for the low price, this is a great tripod and I would purchase it again.

Sony Lightweight Tripod
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I recently received another order from Amazon and have observed a somewhat disconcerting trend. The item I ordered was a Sony Lightweight camera tripod. It was shipped in an Amazon-labeled box that measured 12″ by 18″ by 24″. The actual tripod container was 5″ by 5″ by 22″. I could understand double-boxing if there was a concern over fragile merchandise. In this case that was probably unnecessary since, in typical Sony fashion, the original package was very well though out and constructed. What did surprise me is that the Sony box was placed into one corner of the larger container, thus rendering double boxing useless as far as offering additional protection. The rest of the Amazon box was stuffed with brown packing paper. I should mention that something similar to what I’ve described here has become the norm for Amazon shipments I and others (coworkers) have received recently. Example: a person here in the last 3 months has twice received a book-sized item in a 3-plus cubic foot cardboard box.

In this age of “green awareness” this practice should seem unacceptable, especially to a large omni-present retailer like Amazon. There is not only the obvious impact of the wasted packaging material but the added waste of transport related expenses. One could also raise questions regarding environmental issues. Amazon may not see significant concerns over shipping mostly air but a large wasteful container like this effectively reduces the number of containers a FedEx, UPS, etc. truck can deliver per load. More exhaust emissions, more fuel burned, higher related costs the consumer must bear: all of these should be of greater concern to a company known for customer support and loyalty.

Perhaps this is just a consistent habit of laziness or indifference in the various shipping departments Amazon uses? It is somewhat understandable that a shipper, pressed to expedite all products, simply has become accustomed to grabbing what ever container is lying around. After all it does take a time investment, albeit minimal, to fold and tape together the right size container. But in some situations, like this tripod order, the additional boxing was probably uncalled for.

Please take some time to consider the image you wish Amazon to project. Your customers are not ignorant. Green awareness is growing every day. It would seem your company has an opportunity to become a highly visible leader in fast, reliable environmentally friendly merchandising but only if you wish to explore it.

Ideal for portable and common use
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This tripod meets the need of common use. It stands fairly firm, not shaky but not too strong either. Height range is good, and so are the many control knobs. It is compact and light for carry. The biggest disadvantage is lack of a bag. I can’t think of a reason why SONY is so stupid.

Good, but plastic!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I just bought this tripod to replace my aging targus…. let’s say i was mildly unimpressed. This tripod is not what it is cracked up to be… after reading reviews i decided its sounded great, and after shopping around it seemed a really good deal (especially on sale!) So when i opened my package i was disspointed not because of tis looks or weight (it is indeed fairly light for the sturdiness it provides) but it was made of mostly plastic. My old targus was almost completely metal disregarding the head, but i realized this tripod is extremely sturdy for a cheap plastic tripod, something my targus seemed to have failed at. Overall its a great product if you can overlook its build material. Works great…= ] Also, this does indeed work with slr cameras and such (I use it with my sony A700 and it does just fine)

Not bad for the money
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this from a store in Thailand years ago, no idea what it cost me but it wasn’t expensive.

I used it for over a year with a Nikon D70 with 18-70mm Lens, shooting clothing for catalogs. It faired ok considering it’s plastic pretty much everywhere.

The problem with it is the weight, the weight currently on Amazon is wrong, it shows 1lb when it should show closer to 2.6lbs.

My summary, nice tripod for digital cameras, but for DSLR get a gitzo.

No way on earth i would use this for a video camera that was not some micro version either.

Great Name Brand at a Great Price for a Tripod!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I shopped around and priced the sony tripod and yours was more cost effective. I ordered and it seems like I got it the next day lol. That was fast. . . .

All the negative remarks made me think twice. But, I see that you can not believe all the negative remarks made about vendor products. For my part, I received a great product at a great price and good customer service. This has made my day lol.

The product is exactly as advertised and works great. I prefer this tripod for a few extra bucks because it can get about 5-6 feet tall. Really useful!

And it’s a SONY.

The name is worth $25 ;)

Bah. Mostly plastic, and heavier than described.
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
When I was shopping for this, one review caught my eye saying this tripod was “mostly metal.” That claim, along with the light weight in the description, were the two things that sold me on the model.

Well, NEITHER ARE TRUE. This thing is indeed mostly plastic made to look like black metal. Apparently, this fooled the other reviewer, but not me. The only metal I found on the whole thing were the bars of the legs themselves, and the bar of the swivel handle. Every single other part of this thing is black plastic. All of the hinges and joints are plastic. The leg braces are plastic. The height crank is plastic (yikes!). Even the center tube is PLASTIC. Overall, it looks nice, I’ll give them that; but please know that you are NOT getting a “mostly metal” tripod here. No way.

Now, that by itself wouldn’t be too bad, except that you’d expect something that’s nearly all plastic to be much lighter – it isn’t. The part of the description that reads:

Product Dimensions: 22.3 x 5 x 4.9 inches ; 1 pounds

..is WRONG. Maybe this thing weighs 1 pound on the moon, but it’s much heavier where I’ll be using it, here on earth. It is, indeed, much closer to it’s described shipping weight:

Shipping Weight: 4 pounds

Why the large discrepancy? Who know? Sloppiness on Amazon’s part, I guess. At any rate, the weight was key for me, and there were several tripods lighter than 4 lbs which I passed up. I guess I should have trusted my instincts when they told me this was too good to be true.

Anyway, if I’m going to buy a plastic tripod, I want it to be much lighter than 4 lbs.

The best tripod for this price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my second tripod and I usually use SLRs for photography. I was amazed by the quality of this tripod for an under $50 budget.

I have checked out few in FRYs , Bestbuy, brands like Velbom,Sunpak..but this one is far superior to those.

I would suggest this for everyone , as long as your not a pro/

I am really satisfied with Amazon and Sony

OK, but no standout
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
My wife bought this tripod for me after an older one broke when I forced a retaining clip that was supposed to secure a telescoping leg segment in place, but did not hold well. The newer breed of tripods, this Sony tripod included, have a revised design for the retaining clips. Whether the new design will prove to be more robust than the previous generation is an empirical question; only time will tell. However, after looking at many models, both professional and moderately priced like this Sony, it appeared to me that all had the same retaining clip design. One can only hope that the clips will hold the extended leg segments securely in place and will be less fragile than the previous design.

The retaining clips aside, this Sony tripod has little to distinguish itself from the competition. The tilt/pan head does not distinguish itself for smooth movement, but it is adequate for the casual use to which I would put it. The black color is a nice touch, compared to the pewter color of many other tripods, but that is a matter of personal taste. I doubt that Sony is the manufacturer of such a pedestrian product, and my guess is that they are an OEM reseller that inflates the price by marketing it under their own brand name. Other tripods in this price range come with carrying cases. This does not, though the case from my broken tripod fits it. Some tripods have a hook at the bottom of the center tube from which stabilizing weights can be suspended. This model does not. And, it is mostly plastic except for the leg tubes and the tilt/pan handle. That is not necessarily bad, but, again, whether or not it will stand up under use is an empirical question.

Botom line: it works, but it is by no means outstanding, and it does not appear to be any better, nor any worse, for that matter, than the competition in the same price range. Perhaps the main distinguishing feature is the black color.

Smooth axis and panning
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
For a cheap tripod, the pan and tilt are very smooth. Wanna complain? Buy a $20 tripod from Walmart and try to pan smoothly with it. Wanna moan? Buy a pro tripod for a couple bills and moan about how thin your wallet has become.

This tripod is a good value, smooth operating – a step up from the junk tripods that are too short, too fragile and too jumpy. I gave it four stars instead of five only because there are better tripods out there if you want to spend four or five times the money.

For the price… A+
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Let’s be reasonable folks… this is not a $200.00 Manfrotto tripod. Right? However, this is a very well made tripod that should meet or exceed the needs of the compact digital (still or video) photographer. I originally (foolishly) purchased a Sunpak tripod from Best Buy… the Sony blows this away. If you’re looking for a SMOOTH video head at a LOW cost… you just found it! It’s a PERFECT fit for my Lumix LX3!

very good quality, easy to use, light weight, just a little bit too long for my backpack. i bind it to the side of my backpack. it works. but if you buy a separate bag for it with shoulder strap this shouldn’t be a problem. overall, i like it!

good… for the price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
It’s a good tripod… for the price. Somewhere better than the $20 stuff at WalMart but not quite as nice as even the lower level Manfrotto tripods – starting maybe $120 range? Specs from another site puts the weight at a more reasonable 2.65 lbs – which seems about right from my estimation. If you really believed that this was a full sized but only 1 pound tripod… well, I wouldn’t put my SLR on a tripod that weighs only 1 pound. Only the legs are aluminum, the rest is plastic, albeit quality plastic.

As it is, it holds my Canon Xti with a somewhat heavy 24-70 F2.8 lens (lens ~ 2 lbs) without fear of dropping it, although it does get a little shaky when you extend up the center column. The little crank on the side is not very useful either, I usually just pull the center column up or down. It’s rated for 6.61 lbs max load… and it could probably do that if the load is centered well. The little bubble level does come in useful at times.

Perfectly adequate for a point-and-shoot camera and most SLR cameras without the super heavy lenses. Good weight, reasonable quality, well priced for what it is.

Very Lightweight and Ultra Portable!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This tripod is very easy to setup. Once I got it out of the box, I didn’t even need the instructions because it was it looked like what it did. This can go up to around 5 feet MAX. Which is pretty tall, its a good value for a tripod. This is very lightweight and small enough to bring it along with you! Definitely buy this if this is what you are looking for!

Sony VCTR640 Lightweight Tripod

Absolutely the finest compact tripod for use with Handy Cams or digital cameras! You will be pleased with your purchase of this very affordable Product from SONY. The extension and retraction of the legs works smooth and the head locking device is aggressive with out over tightening.
