I bought the Flip Ultra for my son for Christmas 2008. He loved it – it was super easy to use and took great videos. Then, it died. It wouldn’t power on. Tech support said to remove the batteries for 72 hours and then replace them with fresh ones. We did this and still had the same issue – camera would beep and then die. Since we’ve had it for more than 90 days, they wouldn’t do anything else for us. We’ll be looking for another brand of camera.

I bought the Flip Video for my husband. We didn’t want to spend a lot of money any any sort of sophisticated or “semi-professional” equipment. We just wanted something for basic family use. This camcorder is well-worth the $85 purchase price. The quality of video is sufficient for our purposes. My husband spent an hour or two downloading the softwear and orienting himself to the camcorder. It holds up to 30 min of video, which is then easily downloaded into our computer via a USB that is part of the camcorder. It is very compact- no bigger than my digital camera.
Generally, the Flip is easy to use. There has been one problem: the red button designated to start and stop recording is often unresponsive, so it takes several attempts to start or stop recording. We have never been completely unable to make it work, but it is bothersome. Some quick research on the internet indicated this is a common issue, and the button is being redesigned.
Overall, the Flip Video camcorder is a good value for the price.

Relatively easy to use, love the no flash needed, great picture, easy edit/erase, easy download. Sometimes getting started was a bit clumsy.

The Flip camcorder has its drawbacks, but at its best, it is an ultra-portable, lightweight and braindead camcorder. I can drop it in my purse next to my digital camera and my cell phone (it’s not much larger than either) and be sure that I capture any special moments as I’m about on a day-to-day basis with my daughter. No more missing first baby steps or first words.
This camera is perfect for the non techno saavy, like myself. Its USB port connects directly from the camera, so there’s no wires to lose. I wish that its batteries charged on an AC adapter, rather than using regular AA’s.
The photo quality is decent, but it’s grainy in low light. The sound quality is excellent, much better than you’ll find on the camcorder function of any digital camera — which is the reason we got this in the first place.
The absolute biggest con is that the film can be pretty shaky as there appears to be no motion stabilization. So best use is standing still or on a tripod. Still, it functions fine for the price and its portability makes up for its shortcomings.

Very easy to use. My hands are crippled and you don’t have to hold any buttons down. Just hit record and your ready to go. Also with the hidden usb connector there are no cables to look for when you are ready to download your pictures.

I purchase the flip for my mother as a Christmas gift. It worked great for about 6 months. Very handy and easy for her to use. Great picture and great software for PC and MAC. Loved it! Great value, so we thought. Then it wouldn’t work all of sudden. Never dropped or mishandled. I worked with tech support and couldn’t revive it. Only came on with the little flip beep and then turned back off. I sent it to the company to be repaired. Got it back about 40 days later. It worked and they fixed it for free even though it was beyond the warranty! We were so happy. Then on the next outing. Dead. Wouldn’t work again. Since the warranty is only 90 days, there is nothing to do, except complain here and get another brand. Sorry Mom!
USB Troubles

The flip is a good little recorder, the picture and sound quality is great, but every time I try to put videos onto my computer there are problems. The connection only works on occasion, this is an annoying problem. But minus this it is a great recorder.

I purchased this when it was on sale for $50. I wanted a simple way to make impromptu memories with video, and this is certainly it. I don’t think I’d pay the $229 retail price for it – in face, I know I wouldn’t. If I intended to spend that much, I’d get the Mino or something with more memory. But if it’s your first digital video recorder and you don’t plan to do any crazy video editing, it’s a good way to start – if you can get it at the right price.
Stuck in menu screen! Customer service is a joke.

After about three months of owning my Flip, it would get stuck on the menu screen. The response from customer service was to take the batteries out for 24 hours. This is not very practical and it keeps me from actually using the camera. This problem started within the warranty period, but when I revisited the problem again with the company I was told that it was not under warranty. Customer service never fixed the problem originally.
This is a very expensive paper weight.

When I first got the flip my expectations were pretty low – useful for situations where I don’t have room for the ‘real’ camcorder.
That was about 4 months ago and since then the ‘real’ camcorder has been languishing in its case whereas the flip goes everywhere with us. I love that you can just slip it in your purse (it is a little larger than a deck of cards) pull it out when there is a memorable moment and record it at once! Downloading the video is as easy as pie! the software pops up when you flip open the usb thingie (tech ignorant here) and plug it into your computer. It allows you to edit, merge clips, add titles, etc and is definitely good enough for me. I don’t make fancy super edited and workshopped videos of our family so this is perfect. I plug it in, email the video out and the entire family gets to see it.
The only drawback I can see is that the flip out usb seems to be a little flimsy. I have a laptop with horizontal usb ports and I always place the Flip on a book and then plug it in so that the weight of the camera is not hanging on the usb itself. My guess is that it is built to take it but I don’t really want to take a chance.

I bought this for my daughter to send me videos of my granddaughter. She says it is super easy to use and I love receiving the videos. It’s also easy to upload them to facebook. A good price for what you get.
In love with my Flip Camcorder

I ordered the Flip camcorder when I saw that it was on sale for $50.00 — I thought to myself that I couldn’t buy a decent still camera for that price, and I could use it for both still photos and for short recordings of videos. It arrived in a few days, and I’m ecstatically happy with it.
The interface is simplicity itself – it’s so easy to use that my 10-year-old son used it at a wedding to record the antics of a 2-year-old boy. The supplied software works fine, and it works like a charm with my MacBook’s iMovie software as well. It seems very rugged and well made, thus far.

I have been using this camcorder for several months now, mostly at rock concerts. The quality of video this records is average, and the sound quality is poor. I have found this camcorder is best used for filming close-up shots where there is very little background noise. The Flip camcorder is very easy to use, but the button for starting and stopping a recording is very hard to push. This leads to shaky filming when attempting to start or stop a recording.
The thing I like most about this camcorder is its size. It easily fits into a shirt or pants pocket. Another great feature is the built-in USB port for connecting directly to your computer for easy downloading (no need to connect with a cable). My MacBook has froze up several times when attempting to download clips. I assume this is a flaw in the Flip video software for Mac because my MacBook never freezes when using other programs.
In spite of the negative points I make in this review I only paid $50 for this camcorder (new, not used) and feel it is well worth this price.

What a great bargain! I hardly ever record more than 30 minutes of video at one time, so this is a wonderful and inexpensive way for me to record things. We used it on our recent vacation. I took my laptop with us and was able to download the videos after the camera was full and then use it again. The ease of using it and downloading directly from the camera is great. The quality of the still photos taken from the video wasn’t so wonderful, but the video was pretty good. One of my better bargain buys!
FLIP VIDEO DOES NOT LAST LONG

At first I loved my FLIP upon receiving it as a Christmas gift in 2008 – not even one year ago. Went to use it recently and the camera is FROZEN – this must happen often because it is on the Q and A of frequently asked questions. I email the support staff at FLIP and they instructed me to remove all batteries from camera for 48 – 72 to see if Camera would automatically reset. Batteries have been out for a little over 72 hours, camera still frozen. FLIP support told me that because it is over 90 days ther is nothing they can do. This viedo camera, although small and portable, is nothing more than a disposable video camera that won’t last long. I personally feel whenyou buy something like this the expectation is that it will last a few years at least. Would not recommend.

Just want to say that we have put our flip to much use; after a year’s hard work we had an issue with the powering on. The customer support at PureDigital was great to work with; timely and helpful. I recommend this product and it’s team.

Took the camera out of its package, connected it to my computer and voila- was able to e-mail video files without a hitch. The camera captures very good video and produces a very good sound quality. The camera does not offer many options/settings that you can use, but if you are only going to record simple videos to e-mail to family and friends then it’s great.

This is a great little camera to throw in your purse. It’s super easy to use; even my 6-year old likes to film videos with it. I love how easy it is to download the videos. The only negative thing I have to say about the Flip is the current price. What happened? I purchased a few of these as gifts earlier this summer. . . they were only $50!

This is a must have for any parent! Because of it’s size and ease of operation, I find myself catching all those little moments whether I’m at home or not. Better yet, as I am often too busy to sit and edit footage (etc.) I just LOVE how simple the software is to use. Files load on your computer and you can have a fully edited movie, complete with Title page, in a matter of minutes!! No lie! Then burn a DVD, email them to friends and family, send them in an eCard, etc. Snap, just like that!
