Good for one charge and that’s it.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The product worked for it’s first and initial charge. The indicator LED’s fully lit up and worked just as described. I put it on my camera and all worked well, and was very effective at lighting like it states. But I later went back to charge it and the red indicator light did not come on. But I thought well maybe it is charging but the light is just not coming on, so I let it charge over night and nothing happened. Then I thought well maybe it has to be fully drained to charge, so I did just that. And still no indicator light or light coming from the LED’s themselves. Nothing has come loose or broken or anything. It has been in a protective case for it’s entire stay. It’s been over a month, so I know I can’t return it. But I think it’s ridiculous that this product has this inconsistency. I wonder if other reviewers reviewed too soon and are now experiencing this same problem. This is the first time I’ve experienced this with any product and am very disappointed. Everyone always says save your money and buy a better one, but you don’t care. But when it happens to you, you really notice its severity. I think I’m entitled to an exchange for this product, or they will lose future business from myself and friends.

SIMA Video Light
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
It is a great product for the price. It is extremely bright for the size and does not get hot to the touch. The extension is great, and it allows you to get just the right position for the light if you have a screen that opens up on youur camcorder. Great buy!

Great Item
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This item is blindingly bright, up close. It doesn’t have much of a range but it’s good enough. It has a slightly blue tint so maybe some color gels would be useful to add warmth. This item charges fairly slow considering the amount of usage time (about 45-60 minutes on a 3-4 hour charge). It would have been nice to have the option to use AA batteries. Overall, you can’t beat this price for an item like this. This is a great value and would be extremely useful for home video type recording. Best of all, these lights are stackable.

Despite the description stating it’s silver I got it in black, which was a plus for me because my camera is black.

for the price its great.

Just got it, plugged it in and charged it. no batteries, built in rechargable battery.

took 4 hours to charge. battery life claims to be an hour in the instructions. Very light and pretty bright. upclose interviews it maybe too bright, i can’t look into it directly within 4 feet. One thing i didnt know is that you can buy multiple units and connect them as they have multiple hot-shoe type slots on three sides. remember no dimmer so the light is what it is, some type of diffuser would help. if there was something that had a dimmer and used AA’s at twice the price i would have bought it but to get that you are at five times the price so i cant complain.

Would have given it 5 stars BUT……
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Pros:

1. Very lightweight & compact

2. Very bright

Cons:

1. Battery take awhile to charge (about 3 hours for one hour plus of light)

2. Cannot use the light with the mains – have to wait to charge

3. Inbuilt Lithium Ion cell – will not accept external battery solution

I really love this product – it is unbelievably bright and cool to the touch, at most it gets warm. The light quality is not the bluish LED cast, but a warmer, richer tone.

I opened it up, and it is a simple and high quality build. At first I had problems charging it – it quit on me after like 5 mins – started to flicker and died. Then I discovered the power brick was for 110 volts – so recharged it, and everything was fine. Note that it starts flickering before the battery quits.

Highly recommended – if you are a DIY sort of guy – open it up, and you will see it is very easy to modify to circumvent the CONS….

This is a waste of money
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This is one of the worst purchases I’ve ever made. Upon purchasing this light, I charged it overnight and took it to a shoot the next day, where it worked for roughly 30 seconds and then flickered out. Nothing afterwards would get it to work at all, and now it won’t charge anymore. I would return it and demand my money back, but I’ve already thrown away the packaging. I would strongly advise anyone looking for a light to NOT buy this one. You might as well light your money on fire–you’ll probably get more light that way, too.

Excellent light for the money! I’m buying a 2nd one…
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I initially purchased the Sima SL-20LX LED light for my tiny HD consumer camcorder after seeing its price and after previously looking at much more expensive pro LED lighting solutions for my pro cameras.

This light is quite bright, and although light and mad of plastic, appears well-built and like it will last long. The color temperature is fine for daylight use and possibly as a kicker indoors unless you are going for something really warm – though a gel would work but dim it a bit.

I was pleased to find the nice diffusion panel on the light making for a very even spread of light with no apparent hotspots. Another pleasant surprise about this light is the shoe fitting notches on the 3 sides of the light, enabling you to connect another one (two, or three) of these lights to it to make a bigger, brighter panel.

The light also came with a basic, but decent and useful extender/adapter bar for cameras with no shoe fittings, but I don’t need it.

This is such a useful and decent quality light that I will buy more of them. Much better quality than I expected, and I can use them for my professional productions as kickers and to bring sparkle to eyes in documentaries. I was looking at the LitePanels products for pro use, and still may eventually, but these work well enough that I can workaround their limitations for the savings. Yes battery life is a bit limited compared to pro models, but for the price difference you can have a more than one and PLAN around their use.

Only 4 stars because they don’t accept AA batteries or anything and because the included charge is only 110V and not 110/240 – meaning I can’t use the adapters overseas when I travel which is a pain in the neck and means I have to source another adapter to charge them (increasing its overall cost). There may be an international version of this SIMA light, but the cost of this one, quick shipping, and fact that this is a 5V 300ma commonly used adapter means it isn’t that much of a big deal.

Overall I highly recommend this light for personal camcorder use certainly with pro applications in a indie/documentary filmmaker’s bag of tricks. Plus they are so small for their brightness they are highly portable. :)

This light is really, really, really bright
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I used this light attached to my Panasonic FX37 camera to record introductions with people at a meeting.

[...]

It’s really bright. In a way it doesn’t make sense to attach is to a camera that is going to be very close to the subject. The specs say they light is effective between 15 and 25 feet, so you might want to consider that when purchasing.

Brightness Overstated
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The ad for this product far overstates the brightness of the lamp. In fact, the light emitted is really very dim, and does not really add to the color balance (which is what is sought in a low light environ). It only would serve as a fill light in very close shooting situations.
