It worth it just for its scanner function……
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve looking for a good scanner; it turns out to be that all-in-one is the only choice these days. As I have a laser printer for all printing jobs, I just use it as a scanner. I didn’t even remove protective tape from the cartridges to save the ink for some large portrait printing later on. It scans fast and neat, besides the daily record-keeping works, I’m processing all old photos and save them electronically.
A talkative machine…
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This machine works well. It’s a little confusing to move from scan, copy, and printer from the computer. But, with a little patience, it works well. My only negative comment concerns the noise it makes warming up and getting ready to print. It sounds like an old Model A Ford getting cranked up…I appreciate the results, and it’s usually user-friendly.
great printer for the price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
For the price, it’s a great printer. Does what I need on a small scale basis, with decent quality.
Lower operating cost than most

This is the third Canon Pixma printer we have owned. The first two were blown out by power surges (we have extraordinarily unreliable and variable power in the islands).
The first Pixma printer we bought is something of a legend for it’s inexpensive cartridges which could be purchased retail (OEM) for less than $10 apiece. When we bought that, we already had several other printers in the house, at least 1 unused. The issue we had with each of the others (a Dell, an HP and an Epson) was that the printer cartridges cost as much as, or more than, the printer itself. If you already have a printer, you know that the manufacturers are using the Gillette razor model; pricing the printers low, and gauging on the ink. The cost for a replacement cartridge for my HP laser was around $200, the Epson, around $100, and the Dell (which came free with the computer) cost over $100. Since this is a home printer we cared less about print quality, and more aboiut reasonable operating cost. i have not yet printed any photos and so can not comment on print quality in that regard, though Canon claims it is a high point.
I will say that the print quality on our first 2 Pixmas was somewhat less than ideal. I was able to remedy that by printing on high (photo quality). On our new printer, the MP 490, the print quality is better, BUT, unfortunately the cartridges cost more. They still cost at least 1/3 less than those for comparable printers, but are not as reasonable as on prior models. This is what took a star off in my rating.
In terms of features and ease of use:
this printer fixes an annoying issue we had with the other 2 pixmas. the cartridges are easier to change. You no longer have to hold the door up or have it hover at an awkward angle.
My kids like the digital read out, and, I will note for those new to the line; Canon printers keep track of ink use. The software logs cartridge changes and lets you know when you are running low on either (black or multi-color) ink. Often this is a bit off. that is, you can get a few more prints after it tells you it is out. This is a nice feature. I have had the experience of running out of ink while printing a 100 page document on my HP, only finding out that half the pages came up blank after the entire document ran.
On wimdows machines, set up is very easy: plug & play. It will work without loading extra printer drivers. I can not comment on this with regard to macs, since w do not have one.
You can switch to scan or print with the touch of a button. Both of these functions work flawlessly.
The other feature this machine offers over our old pixmas is a card reader. You can take a card out of your camera and print direct from the machine without going through a computer. (Most of the newer printers offer this feature, so this will set it apart in comparison to last gen. printers, rather than other brands).
It also has a very small footprint; not much larger than is required for a letter size scanner. It is not as small as a portable, but very compact for a desk top printer.
All in all it is a VERY nice printer for the money. We got it for an insanely low price during Amazon’s ‘black friday week” sale. Even at full retail it costs roughly the same or less than comparable printers. The primary reason we bought this was for the lower price ink cartridges. In that regard, the saving are not quite what they were on older models of the Pixma, but are still less costly than for other brands. We have owned Pixma printers for more than 10 years now and have been very happy with them overall, or I would not have purchased a third.
Excellent for the price!

Although this Canon printer/ scanner is a bit large and takes up most of my cabinet space, I’m quite happy with the print quality and features! I purchased this on a promotional price of about $50.00 and can’t complain. For those of you looking for a basic, but good quality printer/ scanner, I’d highly recommend this unit!
Canon Pixma MP490 Printer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The printer is easy to set up and use, with very good print quality. I only use it for basic document printing and do not use it for photos, so I have no knowledge of the photo print quality.
Poor colors and takes too long to print.
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
We got this after reading good reviews on it but were very disappointed to find that it took forever to turn out copies and print documents. Moreover, no matter what I do to adjust the colors, I cannot get it to print the colors I see on the computer screen – or even come close. To boot, it uses ink very quickly. Simple things like speed and accurate color are pretty basic but this printer doesn’t have them.
great printer for the price

Have been a loyal hp printer user. This is my first canon and so far i love it. The ink cartridges are cheaper than hp. Will buy this again.
Afforable all in one printer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Canon is affordable and does everything that most people expect and all in one to do at home. Great for students. Very easy to install though you need to purchase your own usb cord (not supplied). Print quality is good and prints pretty quickly.
Pixma MP490 review
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I purchased the 490 to replace my Pixma 480 that had a paper jam and would not clear. I found it cheaper to buy a new printer instead of having it repaired. Says something about our throw away society. I have found the printer to be very fast after it had warmed up. The photo quality is good but not like the higher end ones. I was disappointed in the ink cartridges being changed from the 480 as it was supposed to be their upgrade over the 480. The cartridges from my 480 will not fit and I was very disappointed in this. Another way to force you to buy the new cartridges.
Works great! Just beware of ink costs…
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I love this printer… does everything I had hoped very well. Scans perfectly clear, fast copies and decent print speed. Set up with no problem at all. Only drawback I see is the ink prices…. even at discount ink stores the ink for this model costs more then the printer itself. I have not owned it long enough to see how long the ink lasts.
* I should have mentioned, I got this on Black Friday super cheap…. so my comment about ink being more then the printer itself was based on what I paid for the printer.
Excellent Value
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Considering the low price of this all-in-one printer, I was amazed by its features and ease of use. The print quality is on par with any other inkjet printer that I’ve used, and it’s speed is better than most. Copying documents couldn’t be easier, and photos are a snap. My only criticisms are that it doesn’t come with a USB cable and does not have wireless capability. However, all things considered, it’s well worth its low price.

So far I haven’t been able to figure out HOW to print; in other words,it has not yet printed ANYTHING. I admit I haven’t spent hours trying, but this is not my first printer and I haven’t had this situation before.
For instance, it tells me to put in my card. Usually I just want to print a pic that is already on my laptop. I haven’t thrown the box away yet, in case I have to return it. I live in a small place & the box takes up room I don’t have
It all means I’m not the happiest!
Great little printer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I just recently purchased this Canon MP490 when it was on sale for 40.00. What a great deal !!!
Yes, its a little noisy but it prints fast with good color, makes clear copies, scan feature is very nice. I have not tried printing photos yet.
It does not come with the USB cable you will need to connect to your computer, but then again, I dont know of any printers that do come with the cable.
Set up was very easy, took about 20 minutes. And you could probably skip all that set up and just install the drivers if you wanted. But I wanted to check out the bells and whistles that comes with complete set up.
I was deciding between this and the HP F4480, but the sale price on the Canon sold me. Its also a very nice looking printer and easy to use. Overall I am very pleased with my new printer and feel confident recommending it to others.
Pixma 490 all in one
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have had this all in 1 Pixma all in one printer about 1 month now.It works fine in all fuctions, scan, copy, and print. Very affordable price, and superb performance. Perfect for a Home PC or small office. The only thing it doesnt come with is the usb cable. I got lucky and was able to use my old printer usb cable. I guess Canon doessn”t realize that most people use printers connected to the internet.Other than that I’am very satisfied with this printer!
SO GLAD I GOT A CANON PRINTER
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
THIS IS MY FIRST CANON PRINTER. FIGURED I COULD NOT GO WRONG SINCE I ONLY USE CANON CAMERAS, A PERFECT CHOICE. SETUP WAS A BREEZE AND PRINT QUALITY WAS GREAT. I LOVE THE IDEA OF 8 1/2 x 11 PRINTING EDGE TO EDGE. NEVER HAD THAT WITH MY OTHER PRINTERS. MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT I HAD TO BUY THE USB CABLE FOR IT. NOT THAT IT WAS EXPENSIVE BUT IT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE BOX.
I WISH THE CARTRIDGES WERE LESS EXPENSIVE. BUYING 3 CARTRIDGES COSTS MORE THAN THE PRINTER. IT IS A LITTLE NOISY WHEN IT GETS READY TO PRINT BUT THE NOISE IS WORTH THE QUALITY OF THE PRINT THAT COMES OUT.
THIS IS A GREAT BUY AND YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED.
Good So Far
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I just set this up today, and it’s working fine so far. The print quality is decent, and I can’t complain about the speed. I wouldn’t want to print documents that are hundreds of pages long with it, but for small documents it doesn’t take long. However, keep in mind that although this product comes with a power cord, it does NOT come with a cord to connect to your computer. If you want to connect to your computer, you will have to provide a USB A to B cable. Also, the product page has an image caption that advertises wireless printing, but I don’t see any wireless capability.
Inexpensive Printer, Pricey Cartridges
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great printer, for pictures as well as your daily needs, like printing a recipe or an article. I like that you can scan as well, though it’s a bit loud during that feature. I generally print using grayscale to save the color, though the color and the b/w cartidges are almost equally expensive (get them onsale when you can and buy lots). I like that I can use the “scan to .pdf” feature with a quick online download. This feature allows me to scan old photos/documents into a .pdf doc and then print copies either on my computer or with an online photo service. I use this printer for occassional photo printing, not sure if it’s a good idea to use this as your exclusive photo printer because of the expense of the ink. No complaints about the price, onsale under $70.
MP490 All in one
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The printer functions as advertised. It’s performance is consistant and more reliable than the HP printers I’ve owned. Output is good. Paper loading and feed are more trouble and jam free than the HP printers.
I would definitely recommend the product.
Error 6000 when plugged it in
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Installed the software drivers followed by plugging in printer. Error 6000 on lcd display. see user manual-says nothing of this error. Not worth the $40 paid for it if it isn’t going to work, Returning to Office Depot.
Very nice copier
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My expensive Xerox copier died, and I wanted a replacement that could copy a book. My fax machine can handle 8.5″x14″ paper, and I do not need the reduction capabilities of the Xerox copier. This all in one is great as a copier. If no computer is attached, it starts up as a copier. You can control the number of copies, but the darkness and contrast is controlled automatically by the printer. For the price, it is a very nice 8.5″x11″ copier.
Love it.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a perfect replacement for our small printer which wore out. Considering how many tasks it performs, the small size is surprising. We have been using it for a couple weeks and are very happy with it. We have not used the fax and probably won’t.
Very Good Value
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This printer delivered pretty much what the majority of previous reviewers suggested: excellent printing at a good value. If you need a high-volume printer, this wouldn’t be a good choice for you, but it’s fast enough for most home users and delivers very good quality. As other reviewers have mentioned, you will need to procure a USB cable to complete the set up.
Very nice multi-function printer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I just recently bought this multi-function printer. I bought it on Cyber Friday and got a discount using a Discover card here on Amazon.com, resulting in a great deal. I’ve printed documents, copied, scanned, and printed a photo with it so far, and everything worked perfectly. The LCD popup panel is clear and easy to understand. I use it for everyday use, nothing work-related or such.
It does not come with a USB printer cable, so make sure you order one with it. I found this one for six dollars: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006B836/ref=oss_T15_product .
I love Canon products. They never disappoint me and their customer service is second to none.
Incredible Value
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We haven’t used this printer much yet, so I can not attest to it’s long term reliability or performance. We haven’t even had cause to use all of its features. But after a month of very light use, it hasn’t given us any reason to regret the purchase. It’s run smoothly ever since hooking it up and installed the software. We’re still just dumbfounded at the price. It was $45 when we ordered from Amazon, but even at the current, higher price, it has to be one of the best values we’ve seen. I know I’ve paid a lot more for basic printers that weren’t nearly as feature-rich, lavish, or attractive.
The printer is larger than it appears in the picture, but it’s not too big for your desk. It’s design targets personal, home applications, rather than business doing high volume printing; and that was just what we were looking for. When we placed the order, it was also about the cheapest printer on Amazon. So, you can imagine our surprise when we opened the box to discover that not only did we purchase a full-featured printer, but it’s also a scanner, color copier, and fax machine. You definately get a lot for the money.
