expensive ink
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I purchased this printer to replace a Canon PIXMA IP5000 which had some print head issues after 5 years. It was inexpensive compared to a new IP5000. The box does not include a printer cable but set up and installation was automatic and easy. My only complaint is the cost of ink which I discovered when trying to buy replacement cartridges. The problem is this printer uses pigmented ink which is very expensive, instead of dye based ink. The printouts using pigmented ink are supposed last longer but we were replacing a home printer and were not in need of the better/more expensive ink. All my fault, the printer itself is fine.

Best printer i've had yet
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This printer here my friends, is the best printer I've had in a while. The features are good, not the greatest, but it's compact and fast. Not to mention, the print quality is amazing for both Photos and documents. It doesn't have a scanner, like I said, it doesn't have the features of a lot of printers on the market... This thing is just here to get the job done. One thing I love about it is the paper tray, It can be on the bottom of the printer or in the classic position of most printers. (Please see picture of the printer)

Good printer.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Excellent quality for the price. Only downside is that there is no auto power on and off feature, like older model.

Ok for small jobs. Expensive if you print a lot!
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this printer to assist with my scrapbooking. I have printed a few hundred 8x10 sheets since purchasing this printer a year ago. I have spent well over $300.00 in ink cartridges. I am behind on scrapbooking projects because I have to talk myself into buying more ink so I can print the pages I create. This has never been much of a problem for me with past printers. The cost is truly outrageous!

The only positive thing about the ink is that it is separated out into separate color cartridges that you replace instead of having to replace an entire cartridge when one color runs out. A nice bonus if you do a lot of printing.

I have an old Canon that would've cost more to replace the printhead than to buy a new printer so I chose the latter. I wish I would've spent the money on a new printhead. The cartridges I had from my old printer would not fit into this one and they were a lot less expensive. It seems that every time I have switched Canon printers, I lose a lot of money in unusable ink cartridges. Also, they don't fill them up as much as they used to in the older models. I go through a lot more ink in a shorter amount of time. Very frustrating!

The print quality is very nice but not worth the price that goes into them. I would look at other manufacturers that care a little more about their consumers and not charge so much for the ink. I would research other printer manufacturer's products before I'd ever consider buying another Canon printer.

Liked almost everything about it
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I replaced a Canon PIXMA ip3000 with this printer. It works almost exactly the same as the old printer with one exception. Canon decided to place a chip on each ink tank to prevent refilling the ink tanks. I'm very dissatisfied with this step that many manufacturers have taken. But I understand why. They are selling printers so cheap that they have to recoup their investment by making a profit on supplies. I used to refill all of my ink tanks. Now my costs have increased approximately 300-400% for ink.

Just what I needed
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this printer to replace my Canon Pimxa ip3000 which kicked the bucket after many years of loved use. I decided on the ip4600 because it had mostly the same set up, yet also offered double-sided printing (which is one of the main things I was looking for since I do a lot of double sided printing.) It was easy to set up and it turns on quickly (quicker than the ip3000). It's also an Energy Star product which I thought was a nice bonus. I have not printed any photos (I don't often) so I cannot tell you how that works out, but I was given a free sample of photo paper inside the box. I have only had it for about two weeks, but have not had any problems yet!

Amazon's prices were by far the best, and you still get the warranty since the product is new (assuming you choose to buy a new one.)

typical Canon quality, at a low starting price . . .
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
If you want a good entry level photo printer, take a look at the iP4600. I print a lot of photos, and although Canon printers seem to use ink pretty fast, replacement ink cartridges seem to be less expensive than other brands, so I have gone with Canon. When my Pixma MP610 died, I selected the iP4600 to replace it.

The iP4600 has a low price, and typical for Canon photo printers, produces good results. Calibrating your monitor will usually help to get you closer to the colors you want. Usually it takes tweaking to fine tune an image for optimal printing. After a while, you develop a feel for how the image should look to get the result you want. Hopefully you won't waste too much ink in this process.

Using Canon's included software Easy-PhotoPrint EX, is a convenient way to print. It's fairly well designed and has a variety of layout options, but it seems like the program hasn't been improved much in the last few years. The perspective is always landscape, although paper in output is in portrait mode. When cropping portrait images, they are displayed sideways. When combining multiple images for a single print, being able to easily rearrange them should be a basic feature, but it is not. The layout selected by the program is apparently based on the date and time of the selected images. Easy-PhotoPrint EX is useable, but the basic setup is wacky, and not very adaptable. It really needs to be upgraded.

In the ink department, the iP4600 uses a slightly smaller cartridge than the MP610. Ink consumption rate seems to be about the same. Everyone knows, ink is where the money is made, and by installing a chip, Canon has been trying hard to get consumers to buy their cartridges. The cost of Canon's cartridges are at least double that of generic brands. Finding no noticeable differences in the results, I usually go with aftermarket cartridges. Print speed is not fast, it takes about 2.6 minutes to print an 8.5x11. When you do larger prints, obviously having a high quality image file, adjusted for printing, is advisable for the best results, and Canon's 8.5x11 matte photo paper is a great product.

When loaded with standard paper, the paper tray protrudes from the bottom, spoiling what is otherwise a tight footprint. The printer will do wireless printing, but if you plan to use a USB connection, be advised that a USB cord is not included.

Fanastic Printer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Once you get the printer put together and by that I mean assembling the print head and installing the ink cartridges. The directions seem to be in GREEK,but take your time and do not force anything.
After using the printer the first time and seeing the brilliant colors on 8x10 photos on glossy paper I was sold. This is the best printer I have ever owned. It was very inexpensive so naturally the ink refills are astronomical but you get what you pay for and I say this one is a winner...

Huge step backwards from the ip4500
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I only owned this printer for a couple of days before returning it. While the printer is OK for low volume printing, it will kill you on ink cost if you print a lot. Compared to the older ip4500 model, the ip4600 is a lot SLOWER and uses ink cartridges that are a lot smaller and more expensive.

The 221 cartridge contains only about 8 ml of usable ink, compared to about 12 ml usable ink in the older CLI-8 cartridge. Both sell for about the same price per cartridge. You do the math. Even with refilled cartridges or OEM cartridges this is way too much hassle - the cartridges are running low or out all the time.

I was lucky enough to find a new, unused ip4500 for $120 canadian in a local store. If you check Amazon, you will see that the ip4500 goes for more than $200 nowadays. But if you print a lot, the ip4500 will still come in cheaper in the long run.

If you can't find an ip4500 anymore - and print a lot - do your wallet and the environment a favour and get a CISS (Continous Ink Supply System). On my ip4500 I use one made by RIHAC in Australia, which serves me well.
